Alcohol, nicotine and drug use prevention curriculum for schools
Prevention Is Better’s full program is the ideal way to begin an alcohol and drug prevention program at your school or complement existing programs. Prevention Is Better uses scientifically validated curriculum, considered the ‘gold standard’ of alcohol and drug prevention education that is shown to decrease the use of substances over time, reduce harm from existing substance use and improve wellbeing of students. We currently recommend the UK’s alcohol and drug prevention curriculum from the Personal Social Health and Economic education curriculum combined with social norms theory and real-world stories from people who have successfully overcome alcohol and drug addiction.
PIB Shield® begins with a school-wide survey on attitudes and behaviors around substance use and key related wellbeing indicators (sleep, exercise, mood, social interactions, parental involvement, exercise). The survey’s aim is to better inform further prevention work and is conducted anonymously and is fully GDPR and child-protection compliant. After the survey, PIB Shield® will have 2 classes per grade throughout the school year, another class for teachers and a class for parents. An assessment can be conducted at the end of the year to assess changes in attitudes and behaviours and use data to inform prevention and wellbeing work in the following year or for school reporting requirements. Classes, topics and targeted age groups of students can be customized based on your school’s requirements. Contact us to schedule an assessment to address your specific prevention needs.
Part of the PIB Shield® prevention program, classes for teachers and parents can also be held independently to address your school and community’s needs.
PIB Inform® for teachers could cover topics around how to implement a full-school prevention program, how to speak with students about substance issues, what ‘red flags’ might indicate a substance use problem in the school and information about current trends in substance use, for example the rise in e-cigarette use and dangers of marijuana use. Topics and classes can be customized based on your community’s needs.
PIB Inform® parents’ classes can cover topics about how to speak with your kids about substance use, what signs to watch out for if substance use may be a problem and hearing a story of recovery from drug addiction to better understand the struggles of teens and how to possibly provide help. Information about various drugs current trends in substance use and accurate information can also be provided. Topics can be customized for the parents or to cover any issues the community might be facing, like concerns around specific substances or substance use related overdoses, violence or assaults in communities.
is the first lesson in the PIB Shield® full-prevention program. The intro class is customized to the age of the students and needs of the school. Topics usually include, personal story of overcoming addiction to alcohol and other drugs, information about substances appropriate to the age of the students and information about how to make healthy choices. Topics and timing can be customized for your school.€350 online, €450 in-person
